Electric Shock, Touch Voltage, Indirect Contact

Electric Shock is flow of external electric current through human body. Touch Voltage is the voltage between the energized object and the feet of a person.
What is Electric shock ?

Electric Shock is the flow of external electric current through human body, which is pathophysiological reaction.
Which causes Electrical injury on human body, like damage skin or damage of internal organs.

What is Pathophysiology ?

Pathophysiology (convergence of pathology with physiology ) is the study of disordered physiological processes due the injury.

What is Electrical Injury ?

Electrical injury is damage (physiological reaction) caused by electric current passing through the human body.

What are Symptons of Electric Shock OR Electrical injury ?

Symptoms are skin burns, damage to internal organs, damage to soft tissues, cardiac arrhythmias, respiratory arrest.

What is Touch Voltage ?

Touch Voltage is the voltage between the energized object and the feet of a person.
If there is Insulation failure in the Object, Object body will get energized, and if personel touches such object, due to higher resistance earth path of energized object and human body to ground compared Object to ground, there will the Touch Voltage.

What is Indirect Contact and its effects ?

Indirect Contact, is the contact with outer conductive part of Object, like metal Body of the Object.
Normally Metal Body of the Object should be properly eartheed, and hence it will be dead. But if there is any internal insulation failure in the Object, the Object’s metal body can become live.
Upon touching such live object metal body parts, it will cause electric current to pass through human body, the current would depend on Touch voltage and human body resistance.

LOTO – Lockout Tagout

LOTO – Lockout Tagout is the Physical restraint of Device as Hazardous Energy source, While doing Servicing/Maintenance.

What is Energy Control Program ?

Energy Control Program makes sure that Equipment is isolated from energy source and made inoperative before planned Service/Maintenance.

When can Arc Flash occur ?

Arc Flash occurs when insulation or isolation between electrified conductors is breached or can no longer withstand the applied voltage.

Arc Flash Hazard Risk Category

HRC – Hazard Risk Category is determined by amount of Incident Energy released upto defined boundary from the source of Arc Flash Point.

Fire Classification

Fire Classification basis Material Involved in Fire and Essential Extinguiser Effect required for Fire Suppression.
